Commonly used residential security devices:
- Master Control Panel: The master control panel is the brain of
the security system. This is where all of the wiring is connected.
- Keypad: The keypad is where arming and disarming is performed by
the client. They are placed near the most commonly used entry door. Many people
install additional keypads in other areas such as the master bedroom.
- Exterior Door Contacts: Doors are monitored by using magnetic sensors.
A door entry is the most important part of the security system. All doors need to
be contacted to offer the greatest protection.
- Motion Detector: The motion detector utilizes heat and microwave
beams. Both factors must be disturbed to activate an alarm. If there are pets in
the home, make sure to let your security professional know the pet’s size and living
arrangement.
- Interior Warning Siren: Your technician will place the siren in
a hallway or main living area. This is a 90 decibel warning siren that sounds when
the system is activated.
- Smoke & Heat Detectors: These detectors should be placed strategically
throughout the home for maximum effectiveness. Controlled environments are required
for the detectors. Monitored detectors have been proven to allow much faster response
than regular smoke detectors. They work by sensing heat as well as smoke. In multi
level buildings they should be placed on each level.
- Heat Detectors: Heat detectors protect uncontrolled environments
that require fire detection because of items like hot water heaters, air conditioning
units, gas heaters or furnaces. Attics, garages, basements and kitchens are great
locations for heat detection. These detectors respond to a rapid rate of increase
in temperature or when they reach 135 - 190 degrees.
- Glass Break Detectors: This device is essentially a microphone
specifically designed to detect the sound of breaking glass. It is directionally
operated and needs to be in clear line of site of the area you are trying to protect.
This device allows you to detect intruders before they get into your home or business.
- Keyfob: This is a wireless device that allows you to arm and disarm
your security system without going to the keypad.
